Miró/ Portabella art

This fantastic new exhibition at the Fontana d'Or in Girona shows how Miró the artist and sculptor collaborated with a young filmmaker, Portabella to illustrate the creation of some of the most emblematic pieces of art of the 20th century.
Miró was a creative genius in several formats and here we see him working on painting windows for a temporary exhibition, other creations made into massive wall hangings or cast into 1,000 kilo bronze sculptures. 
His work is a pleasure to view as there is always something unexpected to be discovered. As an aside, one of his largest wall hangings was on display in the foyer of the twin towers on fateful sep 11,2001 and he refused to make another.
Portabella captures these creative sessions perfectly, usually letting the craftsmen themselves express the process or just standing back for us to enjoy what could be a wonderful theatrical set.
Impressive in scale and ambitious in intent this exhibition is a treat, filmmaking as visual art, literally.

Chillida exhibition Girona

Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002) is one of Spain's foremost artists and expressed himself in many materials including stone, clay, metal, paper, collages and earth sculptures.
The exhibition currently at the Fontana D'Or in Girona until April 25th combines many of these mediums in the artists life long exploration of matter, both physical and conceptual.
His sculptures are famous for avoiding symmetry and offering several perspectives no matter what material he is using. 
His works are found all over the world in both museums and parks but the largest collections are in his native Basque country.
Be sure to see this important exhibition, it is fascinating on many levels and a real coup for Girona.

Joseph Beuys exhibition Girona

Joseph Beuys (1921-86) a German artist and philosopher has an exhibition of a project which he dedicated the latter part of his life to showing at the Caixa Girona Fontana d'Or gallery. While trying to re-establish man's origins and restoring their bond with nature, he was one of the original thinkers behind what would now be called the environmental movement. Various tree planting projects around the world were meant to inspire a global mission to effect environmental and social change which we could usefully pick up again today.
Through a series of photographs we follow these projects, the first in 1980 on an island in the Seychelles where he planted two protected species of coconut trees to illustrate the alignment of man's intelligence with nature. This symbolic recreation of paradise was followed by the planting of 7,000 trees of endangered species in Bolognano, Italy from 1982-84 and finally his most ambitious project was for the Kassel art fair which took 5 years and again involved the planting of 7,000 oak trees, each tree accompanied by a stone obelix which was meant to seal his pact with nature.
The person who claimed "every man is a potential artist" was a true rebel and original thinker that we are busy re-evaluating and finding plenty of modern day relevance to his ideas on art and nature.
