Many people visit the Dali/Gala castle at Púbol but do not realise that only a couple kilometres off the road there is a charming church hamlet to visit without any tourists, Sant Andreu de Pedrinyà.

Set off a country road which turns into a gravel path shortly after, but in a peaceful and beautiful location next to a stream with plantain trees which offer a cool place to rest and contemplate the small church.
Currently part of La Pera diocese there are some 20 inhabitants in the few houses surrounding the church.
The village goes back to the year 971 and the present church is documented from the 11th century and is a good example of Romanesque features revealed during the restoration in 1975.
The interior is simple stone with fragments of the original murals having been transferred to the museum of Girona for safekeeping.
The gardens are well kept and it is a nice spot to picnic if you are walking or biking in the area.

La Torre B&B location

La Torre is a medieval fortified farmhouse where the only remains from that period is the tower from which there are spectacular views over the Pyrenees and Costa Brava in the distance and the protected natural park of Les Gavarres on the doorstep.
This is a very peaceful base from which there are plenty of nice walks into the park or all the way to Girona on paths over the hills. The village of Celrà is only a 5 mins walk and has local shops, banks and bars as well as an old part of town around the church.
Ideally you need a car for easy access and to take advantage of the Costa Brava (20 mins away) and interesting places like Pubol, part of Dali’s legacy to his wife Gala which is only a 10 min drive away and the medieval villages of Madremanya and the pottery centre of La Bisbal.
La Torre could not be easier to reach from Girona airport (20 mins) and the main motorway that goes south to Barcelona (1 hr) and north to the French border (50 mins). Getting into the Old Town of Girona to explore the Jewish quarter or the Cathedral is a 10 min drive and here there is a wide variety of good restaurants, terraces to sit on and shops to tempt you as well as the open air market on tuesdays and saturdays in the Devesa park.

Gala Dalí’s Castle Museum in Pubol

For anyone interested in Dalí the triangle of the Theatre Museum in Figueras, Dalí’s house/museum in Portlligat(nr Cadaques) and his wife Galas Castle in Púbol (nr La Bisbal) are all must visits. The Museum in Figueras is the second most visited in Spain after the Prado in Madrid and clearly shows off his true creative genius on a grand scale. The Castle at Púbol and his house in Portlligat offer a more intimate view of their lives as well as all the numerous famous visitors that spent time in this area.

Dalí gave Gala the Castle at Púbol and may have regretted it as she soon insisted on written permission before allowing him to visit. She died there in 1982 and Dalí moved to the Castle to try and come to terms with her death but this ended up with his setting fire to himself while in bed (accident or on purpose was never very clear) and was moved to some rooms above the Museum in Figueras with a full time medical staff until his death in 1989.
The Castle shows some typical Dalí creativity such as elephants on stilts in the gardens but overall is a more subdued experience while the setting is certainly delightful and peaceful. The countryside around Púbol is typical of the Empordà, rolling fields of wheat or grass with patches of olive groves and pine forests mixed with cork oaks. For the more adventurous, catching a train from either Barcelona or Girona and getting off in Flaça means you can walk the back road through La Pera to get to Púbol which will take you some 45 mins to absorb the wonderful views.
